| Another panel involved with the quality of life in Brownstown is also
involved with its legacy: Established in 1992, the Historical Commission is
charged with the ambitious mission of preserving all artifacts, buildings
and other items related to the community's rich history. And top on the commission's list of projects is restoring the nearly 100-year-old farmhouse at the intersection of King and Telegraph roads. Dubbed "Brownstown Acres Farmhouse", the original structure was a one-room frame house built by Miles Dushane, a Canadian who moved to Trenton in 1879. The Historical Commission, working with the Historical Society, has made many upgrades to the building and grounds. The site has also been used to film Civil War Documentaries. The key to the commission's role, though, is its overall attention to the community's rich legacy; a legacy steeped in stories of its early days as home to Native Americans. The site of the first St Mary's Church dating back to 1836 is the location of the Brownstown Historical Society's latest project. When complete the site at the intersection of Lee and W. Jefferson Roads, will feature memorials and signs relating to the rich history of the area.
