One of the most frequently used police services is animal control, which is provided to Brownstown Township residents by Brownstown Township. Noisy Pets

This is Animal Control’s biggest complaint. We understand that dogs do bark and it only becomes a problem when it falls under Ordinance 133.804. If you think you may own a barking dog, which is described in the below ordinance, barking collars have been known to very effective.

Noise Ordinance 133.804 states: No person shall keep or harbor any dog, cat or other animal, in a kennel or otherwise, which by loud, frequent or habitual barking, howling, growling, yelping, baying, crying, whining, or any other sound shall cause an annoyance to a neighborhood or to people passing to or fro on the streets, nor shall disturb the public peace, nor shall constitute a menace to the public health, safety or welfare.

Back To TopLeash & Sanitation Laws

Brownstown Township "Requires that dogs be on a leash and under control at all times when on property other than the owner’s. No person owning or having custody or control of an animal shall intentionally, permit the animal to defecate on any property, unless it is the owner’s property, or unless such person immediately collects all fecal matter deposited by the animal. For a full reading of the Animal Control Ordinance, copies may be obtained at the Township Clerk’s Office or by performing a search for Ordinance #173-4.

Invisible Fence

Homeowners wishing to install an Invisible Fence would be advised that, before doing so, it is always good to contact the Miss Dig to avoid problems during the underground installation.

Back To TopPet Adoptions & Policies

Occasionally dogs, puppies, cats and kittens are available for adoption. If you are interested in an adoption, please telephone the Animal Shelter at (734) 675-4008. We are always happy to have the animals in our shelter adopted, however, if you are looking for a specific breed and we do not have a pet available, you can view animals from other local shelters.

Live Traps

Brownstown Township does have live traps for residents to use. Traps are given out on Monday and are then picked up on Friday. If you need a live trap, ad we are not in the office, leave your name, address, location of wild animal and if you have a desired placement for the live trap. They are issued on a first come – first serve basis. A Brownstown Animal Control Officer will then come to your home , set & bait the live trap. You will not need to be at home to have this done. After setting the trap and you find you have an animal in the trap, again, call us and leave your name, address & inform us if you will need the Live Trap returned.

Kennel License

Applications for kennel licenses shall be filed with the Economic Development Department and are contingent upon approval of the Planning Commission. Kennel license fees are ten or less dogs - $500. More than 10 dogs - $500.
