YARD WASTE COLLECTIONS BEGIN MARCH 24
The collection of yard waste along with your regular trash pick up will
begin the week of March 24, 2008 and run through the week of December 5,
2008. Yard waste should be placed on the curb on your regular collection
days in separate paper bags or waste containers.
State law prohibits the depositing of yard waste in land fills. Yard
waste is: Grass Clippings, Leaves, Garden Debris, Shrub and Brush Trimmings
under 2" in diameter. Yard waste is NOT: Sod, Pet Waste, Logs, Dirt, Stumps
or Branches over 2" in diameter.
Dog License Renewal and Rabies Clinic April 26th
All Township Dog licenses will expire on April 30, 2008. Licenses may be
renewed at the Treasurer’s Office for an $8.00 fee for dogs and a $3.00 fee
for cats. After April 30th, the license fee will increase to $16.00 for dogs
and $6.00 for cats. Proof of rabies vaccination is required for all license
renewals.
If your dog is still in need of rabies shots, they will be available on
Saturday, April 26, 2008 from 9:30 AM to Noon at the new Animal Control
Building on Lillian Street for a fee of $10.00 per dog. You may also
purchase your license at this time. A great way to save time and get your
pets shots and license in one trip!
Annual Spring Clean Up Weeks May 5-16, 2008
The Brownstown Beautification Commission has announced that the weeks of
May 5-9 and May 12-16 are Annual Spring Clean Up Weeks. During Spring Clean
Up, Waste Management will accept, on your regular trash pick-up days,
unlimited household rubbish and many items normally not accepted.
Items accepted include tires, small car parts, appliances with Freon,
unlimited household rubbish, yard waste and bulky items.
During Spring Clean Up please make sure all items are placed at the curb
in 32 gallon or smaller containers or bags. Bundle all loose items in 3 foot
or smaller bundles weighing no more than 50 pounds. Working together we can
help "Clean Up " Brownstown starting at home.

*During the Annual Spring/Fall Clean-Up, residents may dispose of larger

29TH ANNUAL FREE KIDS FISHING DERBY
Open to Boys & Girls of all ages, the derby offers the opportunity to
spend a relaxing day fishing and picnicking along the Huron River. Trophies
and prizes will be awarded for the Longest Fish, Most Fish caught, and
Smallest Fish Caught in three age groups: Ages 7 & Under, Ages 8-12 Years
and Ages 13 & Over.

Rentals
Community Center Booking 2009 Dates
The Brownstown Community Center, located at 21311 Telegraph Road is now
booking group rentals through 2009. The halls can accommodate up to 323
people and a full kitchen is available.
Rental rates range from $50.00 for groups of 50 or less on a weeknight to
$500.00 for groups of up to 323 on a weekend. Halls are dividable to
accommodate any size party and rental rates vary with party size. Kitchen
facilities are available for a $50.00 charge. White table linens and
clean-up services are also available for an additional charge.
A $100.00 security deposit is required to reserve a date. To check date
availability, please call the Recreation Dept. at 675-0920
Thorn Park Shelter Reservations Accepted April 1st
Starting Tuesday, April 1st, 2008 residents may reserve the Thorn Park
Picnic shelter for summer 2008 events. A fee of $25.00 per date is required,
limit of one date per residence. Reservations, by Township residents only,
are accepted in person only at the Community Center.
The 40’ x 60’ shelter is equipped with 12 tables and has one electric
outlet available. Capable of accommodating up to 100 people, the shelter is
ideal for family reunions, company parties, and large picnics.
For larger parties, a 6 foot hooded, charcoal barbecue grill is also
available for rentals. The grill may be rented at the Community Center for
an $11.00 charge with a $50.00 security deposit.
 General Information
Are you interested in a Curbside Recycling Program?
Brownstown Township is looking for feedback from residents regarding the
interest of a curbside recycling program. The program would include township
wide weekly collection of newspapers, magazines, catalogs, plastic bottles,
cans, glass bottles and junk mail in a single 18-gallon curbside recycle bin
provided to you for the program. The collection would be on your normal
rubbish collection day. The cost is estimated at approximately $2.20 per
home, per month. If you would like to give us your opinion, please complete

CURBSIDE RECYCLING SURVEY

possible implementation of a curbside recycling program in Brownstown.

Commissioners Needed
Brownstown Township is currently seeking residents interested in serving
on the Recreation Commission, Planning Commission, Environmental Review
Commission, Architectural Review Commission and the Brownstown Building
Authority.
Most Commissions meet on a monthly basis, in the evenings, to discuss
areas of concern for their appointed jurisdictions and make recommendations
to the Township Board.

Get involved with your Community!
Discount Amusement Park Tickets
Once again this year, Brownstown Recreation will be offering discounted
tickets to many area amusement parks and attractions. Offered in cooperation
with the Michigan Recreation and Parks Association, this program allows you
to purchase your tickets before you leave and avoid the long lines at the
parks.
Tickets will go on sale in early May and will be available for the
following parks: Cedar Point, Geauga Lake, Detroit
Zoo, Kings Island and Michigan Adventure. Check the PDF file for
actual prices.
BIKE PATH SET TO OPEN IN LATE SPRING
After years of planning, design, grant applications and permits,
construction is nearly complete on the Woodruff Road Bike Path. Fall saw the
installation of asphalt for most of the path, the placement of the bridge,
relocation of several electrical poles, and completion of the railroad
crossings. Once the weather breaks, crews will return to complete the paving
and perform site restoration work.
The path is expected to be ready for use in late spring, allowing bikers
and walkers access from Lake Erie Metro Park to Rockwood, Flat Rock and
beyond. Watch for a formal opening and ribbon cutting later this spring.

NEW SUMMER AQUATICS PROGRAMS!
I n cooperation with the Gibraltar School District,
Brownstown Recreation is proud to announce the Summer 2008 Aquatics Program
featuring Swim Lessons, Open Swimming, and the Downriver Swim Club Swim
Team.
Group A—Ages 3-7yrs M-Th 11:15-12PM
Swimmers who are hesitant about entering the water and will focus on:
Comfort in sitting in pool on submerged bench Entry into water Floating
on back Kicking Forward movement in pool Recovery from jump into pool
Group B—Ages 4-8yrs M-Th 11:15-12PM
Swimmers who are comfortable in the pool and ready to start learning
basic freestyle and backstroke:
forward movement arm and leg movement for freestyle arm and leg movement
for backstroke streamline position recovery from diving board treading water
Group C—Ages 5-9yrs M-Th 11:15-12PM
Swimmers are competent in freestyle and backstroke and are ready for more
stroke refinement and additional strokes:
improvement on stroke technique building on endurance 1-2 laps
introducing breast stroke/butterfly beginning flip turns
Private Swim Lessons

Group Swim Lessons
$60/session or $165/summer—space is limited in these classes All swimmers
need to be potty-trained and ready to participate in the program. No water
wings, lifejackets, or other water toys permitted. Parents are not allowed
in the pool with the children but may watch from the stands.
Competitive Team
$50/session or $135/summer
No partial session cost permitted
$5 fee for each swim meet
Swimmers will compete in one swim meet against area teams each session
for a total of three meets for summer 2008. Swimmers will be awarded ribbons
for their age group place.
Junior/Senior Group—10-18yrs M-Th 8:30-10AM
Composed of High School, Middle School, and other swimmers with
competitive swimming backgrounds. These swimmers will workout with the
aquatic supervisor four days a week; working on improving stroke technique,
gaining speed, and developing turns and starts to increase their competitive
advantage. All swimmers in this group should be very familiar with all four
competitive strokes (free, fly, back, breast).
Novice Group—5-13yrs M-Th 10-11AM
This group of swimmers will be composed of those athletes who are
familiar with swimming and are comfortable in the water but need guidance in
learning additional strokes and building endurance. The swimmer in this
group should be able to swim at least one length of the pool. Swimmers in
the novice group will be divided up within the group based on ability and
may move up within this group. There will be 2-3 subsections of this group.

SAFETY TOWN
This program is designed for children entering kindergarten in the fall
2008. The nationally established program was developed to provide childhood
safety education. Children learn about fire, poison, strangers, traffic,
cars and playground safety. They participate in safety lessons on the new
Safety Town Village, built through community donations, a miniature layout
complete with houses, sidewalks and crosswalks. Speakers from the Police
Dept. and local utilities, provide safety training to enable children to
enjoy and understand good safety practices. Safety town ends with a
graduation celebration.

The Woodhaven-Brownstown Schools, in cooperation with Brownstown
Recreation and Woodhaven Recreation is offering an exciting new preschool
program to help children ages 0-5 get ready for school. Funded through the
Great Parents Great Starts Collaborative, each one hour event is FREE and
helps provide reading readiness and education skills in a fun and exciting
program. A parent or guardian must attend with the child.

Schedule: Little Dragons - The Little Dragons program teaches the younger
age group the skills needed for martial arts training at a later age. The

and performance. Additionally life skill teaching occurs in all classes.

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Bring your old dog or new

advanced class.

Through the use of a SMART Specialized Services Grant, the Township of
Brownstown is pleased to offer transportation for seniors and disabled
residents.
For a $1.00 co-pay, seniors and the disabled may ride the Senior Bus to
the Community Center for scheduled activities.
Downriver Cab - available for transportation to Dr. appointments,
banking, pharmacy, etc. $2.00 co-pay each way
Authorization is required so interested parties should contact Senior

SENIOR CENTER ACTIVITIES
The Brownstown Senior Community Center offers a wide variety of
activities for seniors on a daily basis. The Senior Nutrition Program,
Health, Education and Enrichment Programs are conducted at the Center on an
ongoing basis. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30
PM. Below is a listing of the dates and times of ongoing programs. For more

If you are a Senior who is over 65 years of age, and you have no
prescription coverage, you may be eligible to participate in one of several
free or discounted prescription programs. Call Senior Coordinator Maxine
Schofield at (734) 675-0920 to determine your program eligibility.
PLEASURE SEEKERS
The Pleasure Seekers, Brownstown’s Senior Club, meets the 1st & 3rd
Thursday of every month at 1 PM in the Community Center. The club regularly
travels, host dances and more. Annual dues are $10.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Volunteers are needed to help deliver hot lunches to area homebound
seniors. Meals are delivered daily at about 11:30 AM and the route takes
about an hour to complete. If you are willing to volunteer one or more days
per week please contact Karen Wright at (734) 675-0920.

Senior Travel Club
The Brownstown Senior Travel Club meets on the second Monday of the month
at 11:00 AM in the Community Center. Seniors can join for $10.00 and receive
discounts on trips. Call Sr. Coordinator Maxine Schofield at (734) 675-0920
for more information.
HOT LUNCHES AVAILABLE
In cooperation with the Wayne County Office of Nutrition Services, Hot
Lunches are available to seniors age 60 and over. Lunch is served Monday
through Friday at 12:00 Noon in the Brownstown Community Center. Suggested
donation is $2.25 per meal. Reservations are due one day in advance and can
be made by calling the Recreation Department at (734) 675-0920. Monthly
menus are also available for pick-up at the Recreation Offices.
Hot Lunches are also delivered to qualified homebound seniors. Lunches
are delivered Monday through Friday with frozen meals for emergency use. Any
senior needing delivery should contact Wayne County Nutrition Program at
800-851-1454.

Registration for all programs may be made in person at the Recreation
Department, 21311 Telegraph, Brownstown, by phone with full payment on a
credit card, or by completing the form below and submitting with full
payment to:

All Program fees include a $1.00 per participant administration fee. This
fee is used to help off set the costs of running the Recreation Department
and help the Department be self sufficient.
Non-Residents are welcome in most programs and will be charged an
additional $5.00 non-resident fee.
Fee Waivers Available
It is the policy of the Brownstown Recreation Commission that no
Brownstown resident child will be turned away from a program due to the
inability to pay a program registration fee.
If your child wishes to participate in any program, and you are unable to
pay the registration fee, please request a fee waiver from Parks &
Recreation Director Mark W. Maxe at (734) 675-0920. All requests are handled
confidentially.
Satisfaction Guaranteed
If, for any reason, you are not fully satisfied with any program, a full
refund of the program registration fee will be issued upon request. Just
stop in the Recreation Department and tell us why you were dissatisfied with
the program, and a full refund will be issued.
