The supervisor's position in Brownstown is similar in nature to that of a city mayor — with one major difference: In addition to being the chief executive officer of the community, he also has a vote in Board of Trustees actions.

This unique role means that the supervisor not only enforces policy, but also helps set that policy.

Filling that role today is Supervisor Arthur F. Wright.

Supervisor Wright is responsible for numerous duties in the operation of the township's government and services.

Among his many duties are:

  • ANNUAL BUDGET: He formulates information from each department director on established revenues, budget request and program statements prior to presenting the budget to the board for approval.
  • ASSESSING OFFICER: His office is responsible for preparing the annual assessment roll covering all of the taxable real and personal property. His office also reviews the feasibility of lot splits and combination requests to verify that they are in compliance with the requirements of the Subdivision Control Act, assuring that land-locked parcels are not created.
  • CHIEF LEGISLATOR: He chairs township board meeting and is an ex officio member of all township committees.
  • PERSONNEL DIRECTOR: His office is responsible for all personnel matters.
  • PUBLIC WORKS: His office is responsible for directing all public improvements.
  • PURCHASING AGENT: He is the chief purchasing agent of the township and is responsible for all contracts covering contracted services and materials. He is responsible for directing all sales of personal property belonging to the township.
  • SPECIAL ASSESSMENT DISTRICTS: His office prepares all special assessment rolls on districts established for property improvements.
  • ORDINANCE ENFORCER: His office is responsible for enforcing all local township ordinances.
  • OTHER ACTIVITIES: Finally, he and his office are responsible for being involved in the business community as well as the residential community when it comes to growth, planning and services.

While the township supervisor is the person in the forefront in dealing with township issues and the operation of the township's government and services, he also is assisted by an able deputy supervisor, who is appointed to that position rather than elected.

The man who has held that position in Brownstown since 1992 is Deputy Supervisor Greg Mahar.

About Our Supervisor

ART WRIGHT was elected Supervisor in 2004. He was appointed Supervisor by the Township Board at the beginning of 2003, following the resignation of former Supervisor W. Curt Boller. Prior to the appointment, he served as Brownstown Treasurer for ten years and also spent two years as a Trustee on the Township Board.

A Brownstown resident for 21 years, Wright served as chairman of both Brownstown's Zoning Board of Appeals and the Planning Commission prior to his election to the Board of Trustees in 1991. He has served as the board liaison to Brownstown's Elections Commission, the Recreation Commission and the Historical Commission.

In 1994, the Municipal Treasurers Association of the United States and Canada awarded Wright a Certificate of Excellence for his written investment policy, and in 1998, he received certification as a cash-handling trainer. In 1999, he earned the designation "Certified Municipal Financial Administrator".

He is the chairman of the 33rd District Court Management Committee and a member of Downriver Community Conference, Downtown Development Authority, Wayne County Township Supervisor’s Association, and the Ad Hoc Committee for Brownstown Town Center. He is also the chief Law Enforcement Officer of the Township.

Wright holds a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and a master's degree in business administration in finance and accounting from Eastern Michigan University.

He is active with the Brownstown Goodfellows in their annual efforts to ensure that no child is without a Christmas. Art is also an active participant of the International Association of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Mayors which is a bi-partisan coalition to protect and enhance our shared natural resources.

About our Deputy Supervisor

Greg Mahar began his duties for the supervisor in 1992 and specializes with working with constituents.  Among his responsibilities are Township Liaison for Brownstown's annual magazine, alternate delegate on the Downriver Joint Management Committee, the Downriver Community Community Conference, the 33rd District Court Committee and the South Huron Valley Utility Authority Committee.

He is chairman of the Brownstown Building Authority, which supervised Township Hall renovations, and was responsible for construction of the police station.  He is also a member of the Board of Trustees for Oakwood Southshore Hospital.

He initiated the first American Extravaganza and has served as chairman of that patriotic musical event for the past five years.

Mahar has a degree in speech with a minor in political science, along with coursework in journalism and public relations.
