Waste
Collection Service Overview |
| Pick Up
Schedule |
Pick-ups
will generally fall around the same time each week. However, due to
traffic, road conditions and volumes Waste Management may sometimes
collect at a different time. To ensure pick up, please place your
rubbish at your curb by 6:00 am or the night before your collection
day. |
Container
Sizes |
Contain
all rubbish in garbage cans no larger than 32-gallons, with lids or
place in tied plastic bags. Cans or bags must not weigh no more than 50
lbs. each. Flatten and bundle cardboard with tape or strip if too large
to bag. Cans over 32 gallons cannot be emptied. |
| Large Items |
Large
items such as furniture, Freon-free appliances, mattresses, bundled
carpet, etc. will be collected on the same day as your rubbish by 6:00
am or the night before your collection day. NO TELEPHONE CALL
IS NEEDED FOR LARGE ITEM COLLECTION. SIMPLY PLACE AT THE CURB ON
YOUR REGULAR COLLECTION DAY
Please remove doors from items before placing at the curb (for the
safety of children playing nearby.)
Cut carpet, padding, and household construction materials in 4-foot
lengths, roll and tie or tape into easy to handle bundles. Each bundle
must weigh less than 50 lbs. Any nails in construction material MUST be
removed or hammered down.
ITEMS PACKAGED INCORRECTLY CANNOT BE COLLECTED DUE TO HEALTH SAFETY
ISSUES. |
| Items
with Freon |
Refrigeration and air conditioning units contain Freon. By law, we
cannot pick-up items with Freon. Please look in the yellow pages under
refrigerator repair for a Freon removal technician. Once the item has a
Freon removal sticker on it, place it at the curb for pick up. Please
remove doors from items before placing at the curb (for the safety of
children playing nearby.) |
|
Hazardous Materials |
Brownstown
participates in two Household Hazardous Waste Collection dates each
April and October. Many types of household hazardous materials,
including chemicals, batteries, and paints are accepted on this day.
Please check public access channel 12 prior to those months for
updates on the date, time and location of those events. |
| Needle
Disposal |
Please do not place needles loose in
your trash; this creates a safety hazard for our workers. WM does
offer a needle disposal program for as little as $20.00. For more
information, go to WM Services. Under WM Services click
on Needle Disposal to view containers available for purchase to properly
dispose of your needles. |
| Heavy
Snow |
Trucks
will be sent out on schedule except in extreme conditions. Workers will
do the best they can under the circumstances. Place rubbish on TOP of
snow. Bags and cans must be accessible from the road. Dark bags are the
easiest to see. Remember to have your trash out on time.
Recyclables:
NOTE: Some services may be temporarily suspended due to weather/road
conditions. |
| Paints |
Paint is
considered a household hazardous waste if it is in liquid form. However,
it can be disposed with your regular trash if properly prepared for
pickup by drying any paint in the can and then place at the curb with
the top off. To help it dry, fill the can with kitty litter or sand. |
| Heavy
Rubbish |
NO containers over 50 POUNDS or over 32 GALLONS in size. If a worker
cannot lift a bag or can, it will be left at the curb. |
|
Placement of Rubbish and Compost |
All
material must be placed at the front curb or roadside and placed so that
it does not interfere with mail delivery. Be sure to place yard waste
containers away from regular trash containers.
Yard Waste containers should be properly labeled and viewable by the
waste collectors. |
| Time of
Set Out |
Place all
rubbish and compost (in season, April through early December) at the
curb before 6:00 am on the day of the pickup regardless of what time
you believe it will be picked up. |
| Other |
WM cannot collect tires, liquid waste
(gasoline & automotive oil), car & truck parts/engines, hazardous
wastes, sharps/needles/medical waste, construction/roofing debris, yard
waste mixed with trash, wood/dry wall, concrete/bricks, fencing/railroad
ties, tree stumps, sod, dirt of any kind, and wet paint cans. |

|
Yard Waste Program Overview |
| Yard Waste |
Accepted: Grass Clippings,
Leaves, Garden Debris Shrubs &
Brush Trimmings (under 2 inches in diameter)
Not Accepted: Sod, pet waste, branches
over 2 inches in diameter, stumps, logs, wood, dirt, rocks, trash. |
| Acceptable Containers for Yard Waste |
Use 20 to 32 gallon cans no larger than 32-gallons,
clearly marked “YARD WASTE”. Face sticker towards the street, so
the drive can identify the can as yard waste. Do Not use a plastic
bag liner. Cans over 32-gallons or 50 pounds will not be
collected. YARD WASTE IN PLASTIC BAGS WILL NOT BE COLLECTED, even
if the bag manufacturer states “biodegradable”.
You may also use paper yard waste bags available at local retail
stores. Do not use paper grocery bags or boxes. No
marking/sticker is required. Store yard waste in a place that it
will not get wet during the week if it rains. If a heavy rain is
expected, place out yard waste the morning of your collection. Wet
yard waste may be over the weight limit and if so, will not be
collected. |
| Why Separate Yard
Waste? |
Michigan law prohibits the
depositing of yard waste in landfills. This means yard waste must be
separated from regular household trash at the curb. |
| Dates of Yard Waste
Collection |
2006
– March 27 through December 8
2007 – March 26 through December 7
2008 - March 31 through December 5 |
|
Please do not place yard waste out before or after
these dates, it cannot be collected. |
| Time of Set Out |
Place compost (in season,
April through early December) at the curb before 6:00 am on the day of
the pickup regardless of what time you believe it will be picked up. |
| Container Placement |
Place yard waste at least 10
feet from your rubbish or on opposite sides of the driveway. A separate
vehicle collects the yard waste and it must be identifiable by the yard
waste vehicle driver. If using a can, make sure you face the yard
Waste sticker towards the street. Paper yard waste bags are available at
local retail stores. Do not use paper grocery bags or boxes. |
| Brush & Branches |
Bundle brush and branches
that are 2 inches in diameter or less in 3 - 4 foot bundles with string.
Please insure bundles are no larger than 18 inches around or 50 pounds. |
| Recycling at Home |
Grass Cycling: Let
grass clippings naturally decompose on your lawn. Mow when your grass is
dry and 3–4" tall. Never cut it shorter than 2-2 ½". Grass is 85% water
and will decompose in a few days. Mulching mowers are not necessary.
Check with a mower dealer to be sure that your mower can be safely
operated without a bag. Use
grass clippings as mulch around plants and shrubs. Mulch adds
nitrogen to soil, eliminates weeds and reduces water evaporation. |
| Disposal of Christmas Tree |
Christmas trees will be collected through the end of
January. |
| Other |
Yard waste placed in plastic
bags will not be collected. Even if the bag manufacturer states
"biodegradable", it is not acceptable. Do not mix yard waste with
rubbish. |
