The Charter Township of Brownstown is governed by a
seven-member Board of Trustees. Of the seven members, three serve as
supervisor, clerk and treasurer.
Under this form of government, the supervisor's role is similar to that of a
"weak" city mayor: He has an equal vote in matters before the community and
has no veto power to reject proposals approved by the board.
All seven public officials face election every four years, with all terms of
office running concurrently.
In addition to serving as the legislative branch of the local government,
the trustees also serve in liaison capacities, working to bridge the
activities of the various Brownstown commissions and the board.
Trustee John J. Cronin is
married to Olga and they have 3 children (Sean, Nicole, and Erik) and 2
grandchildren (Trent and Alex). John was first elected to the board in 1992,
and re-elected in 1996, 2000 and 2004. He received his associate of arts
degree from Henry Ford Community College and his bachelor's degree from
Wayne State University.
A Brownstown resident for over 30 years, he has served on the Recreation
Commission, Elections Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, and as an
alternate on the Architectural Review Commission.
He also represents Brownstown Township on the Southeast Michigan Council of
Governments (SEMCOG), where he served on both the Executive Committee and
the Budget and Finance Committees for 12 years.
Cronin was a Boy Scout leader for close to 15 years in Brownstown T-1234,
spending the last two years as an adviser for a High Adventure Explorer
Post. . He was also the first director of Brownstown's Police Reserve,
serving 3 years.
A veteran, Cronin retired after 23 years from U.S. Army military
intelligence, having served mostly in Airborne Special Forces units and as a
combat medic with the 82nd Airborne Division.
He is also retired from Ford Truck Engineering, in Dearborn, after 31 years,
and received an award from Ford in 1999 for outstanding community service.
John’s memberships have included: Brownstown Goodfellows (since 1981),
Brownstown VFW, 82nd Airborne Association, Brownstown Democratic Party, St.
Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Woodhaven Moose, Friends of the
