About Our Assessor

Sharon Paust was hired in 2011 as the Chief Property Assessor. The primary responsibility of this position is to value all legally assessable property in a uniform manner with fairness and impartiality in accordance with the laws of the State of Michigan

A Level III Certified State Assessor and Personal Property Examiner, Paust is responsible for calculating the taxable value of all the property in Brownstown. These figures are then used to calculate the property taxes. In addition to her normal assessing responsibilities, Paust continues the completion of the update of all property record cards for all township properties. The department's computer program provides sketches of property improvements and digital photographs for enhanced interdepartmental information, as well as public reference material. The department also processes all property transfers and principal residence exemption affidavits, as well as maintain the lot split records for compliance of the Land Division Act.With the construction growth of both the residential and commercial/industrial properties in the township it made sense to have a staff assessor to handle the growing needs of its property owners.
